There’s no mistaking the age old tune to “the chicken dance” when the accordion begins to play. It’s the music, food and fall weather that bring folks of all ages together next weekend, October 15th and 16th, for the annual Chattanooga Oktoberfest. For 15 years Chattanooga Market has hosted area residents and visitors from all over the world, even Germany, to share in the uniquely Chattanoogan German festival.
The staples for Saturday and Sunday are oompah music, German inspired food, and over 99 seasonal and craft beers. But don’t miss these fun events great for the whole family:
- Artoberfest on Thursday afternoon. Local artists gather at the First Tennessee Pavilion to display their works for sale. A chalk art competition will bring out the talents of many area students too, joining in the fall celebration of our artistic community. The event is sponsored by Chattanooga WorkSpace, a Chattanooga Market non-profit project, who provides studio space, events, and platforms for artists in our area to pursue their craft.
- The Annual Oktoberfest 5K Run. Start your Oktoberfest with a bit of exercise – then you can enjoy the rest of the weekend guilt free. We say a “bit” of exercise, because the beer booths will open at 7am for this crowd, it’s Oktoberfest after all. Festive Oktoberfest costume is highly encouraged and prizes will be awarded. Register ahead at ChattanoogaOktoberfest.com or arrive early Saturday morning to sign up.
- Volks Folks Auto Show. A tradition at Chattanooga Market, visitors to the festival will be able to see a collection of volkswagen cars from many different eras. Bug, beetle, slug bug – these German cars that have played a part in every generation. Enjoy the collection all day long on Saturday only.
- Mr. & Ms. Chattanooga Oktoberfest Crowning. Grab your dirndl or lederhosen and join in this beer drinking, chicken dancing party on the front festival patio, complete with live Oompah music and entertainment. The popular vote competition is open to all ages; meet at the front patio stage area at 6:30pm Saturday evening.
Whether you’re picking up some fresh apples (Market is still open for purchasing artisan foods, fresh produce and local art) or looking for the season’s best beer and brats, Chattanooga Oktoberfest is a family event sure to please. Hours are Saturday 10am-8pm and Sunday 11am-4pm.
